Day Trip Destination
Beautiful Lake Marion — 70 to 80 Miles Away
One of the great perks of living near Lake City is easy access to Lake Marion — South Carolina’s largest lake and one of the most scenic recreational destinations in the Southeast. It’s roughly 70 to 80 miles by highway, about a 90-minute drive, making it a very doable day trip for fishing, wildlife watching, or simply enjoying the water.
Lake Marion covers nearly 110,000 acres with over 315 miles of shoreline, spanning five counties and earning the nickname “South Carolina’s inland sea.” Created by damming the Santee River in 1941, it’s named after General Francis Marion — the famous “Swamp Fox” of the Revolutionary War.
The lake is a premier fishing destination, drawing anglers from across the Southeast for striped bass, blue catfish, flathead catfish, largemouth bass, and shellcracker. The lake’s striped bass population is historically notable — they were among the first ever documented to complete their full life cycle in freshwater. Thousands of submerged cypress trees left from the original flooding create extraordinary underwater habitat and a landscape unlike any other lake in the country.
Wildlife is abundant throughout the area: deer, fox, wild turkey, alligator, and a wide variety of birds including eagles, ospreys, egrets, and hawks all call the shoreline home.
